Spoofing spammers

I woke up this morning to find Google Notifier telling me I had 205 new messages. What the hell?

Ah. They’re all failed delivery notices. Some spamming bastard has sent out a batch of unsolicited e-mails spoofed to look like they came from someone at thinkdrastic.net.

Rest assured it wasn’t me. I hate spam as much as the rest of you.

Nope, I just get to clear up the mess afterwards. No doubt I’ll find my domain on all sorts of blacklists now. Oh great joy. I’m in such a great mood now.

Oh, happy christmas everybody.

The key to customer relations management

Don’t send out an email that starts:

Dear XX XXXXX

…then continues with:

Thank you for recently entering our North Carolina Sweet Potato competition in conjunction with Sainsbury’s, Onlinetravel.com and American Airlines.

You what? I entered a Sweet Potato competition!? When?

We received an incredible number of entries and on this occasion we’re sorry to advise that you weren’t one of our lucky winners.

Now you’re just being mean :-(

Sir. Dennis Thatcher

One of the best spam/scam messages that I’ve seen in quite some time – luckily Thunderbird’s spam filter missed it or I might never have seen it…

Dear Sir

We are Attorneys and Executor of the estate of Late Sir. Dennis Thatcher, I wish to notify you that late Sir. Dennis Thatcher, made you a beneficiary to his will. He left the sum of Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Pounds Sterling (350,000 BPS) to you in the codicil and last testament to his will. This may sound strange and unbelievable to you, but it is real and true. Being a widely traveled man, he must have been in contact with you in the past or simply you were nominated to him by one of his numerous Friends abroad that wished you good.

Mmm hmmm? Thats why you sent it from a free webmail account in Germany is it? Thought so.
